Practical Effect Update

14/8/2015

hi everyone!

just here to post some more resources I have been using and keeping it all in track.

I have emailed Howard Berger (https://www.stanwinstonschool.com/artists/special-effects-character-creator-howard-berger) thanks to a pointer from Hages and asked him whether he would be able to give me some in depth information on how the effect was created:

Hello,

My name is Daniel Abend. I'm studying Bachelor of Animation and Visual Effects at Charles Sturt University in Australia.

I am hoping to get into contact with Howard Berger and ask a question concerning his work on Kill Bill Volume 1. I am recreating the practical effect where one of the Crazy 88 men have their heads decapitated in the House of Blue Leaves fight scene. I have found several behind the scenes images of the effect similar to this one with Christopher Nelson standing in the background http://cdn.miramax.com/media/assets/KB-WM-11.jpg however, I haven't been able to source any real information on how the effect was created whether the body was an animatronic or if it was entirely makeup.

If you are able to give me any pointers toward how to recreate the effect It would be very much appreciated.

Thankyou,

Daniel Abend

I have also found some great resources from Synapse effects on creating the blood spurt for when the head is actually off the body: blob:https%3A//www.youtube.com/ebb451e6-9aa6-4cf5-addf-19fbe40ec281 I know its a youtube link but it is sourced from their learning area of their website: http://www.synapsefx.com/fx-reels/category/3

I found that KNB EFX Group was the group who did the effects for Kill Bill: http://www.dsire.com/archive/kill_bill_1/castCrew/crew-knb.html

I found how to contact KNB EFX: http://www.knbefx.com/#!contact/c101w

I have gotten the Kill Bill Diary, it doesnt directly relate to the practical effect but is good for getting background on the movie: http://www.amazon.com/The-Kill-Bill-Diary-Tarantino/dp/B002ECEEKO

thats all for now!
